A 12-foot windmill built for the brewery’s 2022 New Year’s Eve and brought back out in later years. It comes apart into four pieces for transport and storage. The top is a curved sheet metal roof on a wooden frame with the drive inside: a DC motor belt-driven to the blade shaft, on a 3D-printed mount that made tensioning simple.
The middle is a half-cylinder in pine and plywood. The base is a compound curve, tapering as it rises while wrapping around its face. The blades, the fourth piece, are pine studded with roughly 150 LED bulbs soldered to copper tape (a fast, cheap way to run power across the back) and fed by an onboard battery pack so they turn freely. The window openings in the base are each lit from behind.
